This photo, called
Sitges Tango Sunset, is the essence of human warmth - both physical and emotional. The central focus of our picture is the sun's flare, setting beyond those lovely villas, enhancing our setting with that wonderful radiance that only the sun can bring. On the shore, upon the sand, we see action! Couples walk, they dance, they chat, they breathe life. But amongst them, is our couple, in
embrazo. Half in sand, half in water, they present the entire essence of the scene in what they do. And what, dear tangeros, is that essence? Nothing less that pure joy itself!

Look, look, look: for is this photograph not the very incarnation of tango? The couple, he handsome, she beautiful, are what we tango dancers dream of when we embrace. This photo conveys an intensity most aptly, represented and focused on the slight bead of sweat on the lead's face. The colors are soft and sensual, faces framed by the blur on the background and out of focus arms in foreground. The photograph evokes wonderful memories: soft, lovely music in the background; a cheek against a soft cheek; the sound of the partner's breathing just audible next to our ears. We smile and sigh...

The photo - labeled
Forbidden Tango, La Boca - enchants us in its blurriness and mysterious black and white tones. It evokes the image of tango as it meant to be: of the old guard, of a classical bygone era; a romantic dream. The photograph captures the dancers in the purest instant, and they are so
very tango: chic, well dressed, surrounded by and embedded in a scene somewhat larger than life. They are totally immersed in the moment.

This photograph has an elegance to it in composition, content and lighting that is simply remarkable. Left we see chandeliers, hung in mysterious darkness; with the wall, somehow, managing to be both sharp yet also with hint of romantic out-of-focus. The couple are the very essence of chic; he in graceful pose, she in her transparent dress that is wonderful in its simplicity and softness. Outside that magnificent balcony - befitting our Romeo and Juliet. But ahh, the apartment block: this we suspect is bleak in real-life, but here is given an ethereal beauty, enhanced in its reflection from the grand piano. This photograph is so very deserving of praise!

When one becomes saturated and overwhelmed with the good thing that is beautiful tango photography, one hungers for an incarnation of that thing that is unlike all others. But what tango photograph could possibly be
new? Surely none! But that was my quest, and to my surprise, I was rewarded in what you see before you. Let us overlook for a brief moment the sheer quality of the photo: the contrasts, the symmetry of the embrace, the position of the hat, the shadows. Lets us overlook these, but instead just take the perspective of the photo - magnifico!

I was looking for something
special: alluring and quintessential. This, my dear tango friends, is more difficult than one imagines; magnificent tango photographs abound, so to find a unique one takes patience! When I came across this photograph I knew it at once. This image provides a perspective that is beautiful and original. In the foreground, look at the delicate feminine curves of the follower contrasted with the strong masculinity of the lead! Look at the figure standing there, in a glamorous pose, by the door! look at the reflection of light and dark on the floor! This is a master photograph indeed.

I came across this photograph - and stared, and stared. And stared some more. What, dear tango friends, is indeed so captivating about this image? It is not only the architecture, with its magnificently simple structure, and the adorned bars of that window, both harsh and soft. Rather it is the fact that we the viewer are able to capture for all eternity - framed by time, by image, by building and by window - a single instant of the tango being danced between two whom are entirely unaware that this instant is as beautiful to them as it to us. And do we not, all of us, secretly wish that our tango moments could be relived again and again?

I have a confession. Before the image was even selected, my theme was
woman. Woman! As leads we are allowed the immense pleasure of dancing with them, of touching them, of sensual communication with them, even the greatest joy - of providing pleasure to the woman herself through the dance. In the background, we see a woman entranced; but in the foreground, is woman herself! We do not see her face, but she is always beautiful. We do not know her feelings, but we know she is passionate. The gentle flows of her neck and her shoulders are delicate and lovely. She is femininity herself.

This photograph was taken at the Sicilia Tango Festival. The dancers are not in the tango embrace: have they just ended their dance? We do not know. No matter; when I view - no, view is the wrong word, when I
rejoice in this photograph - two words come to mind. The first is
connection, for is this portrait not the very embodiment and essence of that word? But that word connection is insufficient to clearly convey the meaning here. The second word that comes to mind is
divinity... that which is more pure than pure, more beautiful than beautiful, entrancing. For is not tango a thing so sublime and sensual that it can only come from the gods themselves?

The photograph itself is close to perfect: soft, balanced; shadows and highlights producing a measured contrast. The focus takes the viewer precisely to where the photographer wants us. But much more than the quality of the image, what does the object represent? The first contact between lead and follower begins with hand-in-hand, and ends as such. In fact whilst all other contact points between man and woman flow and change, the hand-in-hand is constant, it forms the central focus of the sensual dance. The hand-in-hand is the embrace within the embrace.
